Welcome to Ms Shen’s Chinese Class 2015-2016

Welcome to the 2015~2016 school year at Shanghai American School. My name is Sindy Shen. This is my 10th year in Shanghai American School. I’d like to welcome you and your child to the start of the new school year.

I teach the following levels this year:

Prekindergarten – Chinese Culture

Grade 1 – Advanced Level

Grade 2 – Advanced High Level

Grade 4 – Advanced High Level

Grade 5 – Intermediate High Level

We are going to have a busy and productive year, filled with exciting learning activities, school events and more. Throughout the year I will help your child to make progress in Chinese language learning. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year.

In Chinese classes, everybody is expected to be respectful of themselves, others, time and school property at all times to demonstrate their best efforts in completing assignments, participating in discussions and activities, and performing to the best of their abilities.

You can expect your child to have Chinese homework when he/she has Chinese classes (except for Friday). The homework is not limited to written work; it can also be listening and speaking practice, and sometimes reading. It is expected that homework should be completed before the beginning of next Chinese class.

I expect students to come to class with the following items:

  1. The folder of Chinese course which has been provided
  2. Learning materials that are given in class
  3. Supplementary materials if that was provided
  4. Homework recording book if that was provided
  5. Homework

I hope through my teaching, they will master some Chinese language skills, learn more about Chinese culture and use them in their daily life.

Should you have any questions and concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at Sindy.Shen@saschina.org or come to see me in room 217A at your convenience.

Parent Teacher Conference

Dear Parents,

Please take note of the following important information regarding the scheduling of appointments with our Specialist Teachers during Fall Parent Conferences.
Music, Art and PE teachers in the elementary school will NOT be able to offer scheduled appointments, as initially suggested.  Instead they will conduct arena-style conferences in the lower and upper ES gyms.
Chinese teachers WILL have conferences, by appointment, for all families that requested appointments.  These appointments will be confirmed by your child’s Chinese teacher, via email.
EAL and Academic Support teachers WILL have conferences, by appointment, and these will be arranged by your child’s EAL or Academic Support teacher, via email.
The reason we have changed to arena-style conferences for Music, Art and PE is because of the growing number of parents requesting conferences with these Specialist teachers.  After discussion with all teachers involved, it was decided that arena-style conference would provide these Specialist teachers an opportunity to see the greatest number of parents.

We consider this growing interest in our Specialist programs to be GREAT NEWS!

In addition, we would also like to remind parents that conferences are NOT the only opportunity you have for speaking with your child’s teachers.  If you have any concerns, at any time, please email that teacher and arrange a time to speak with them.  We are keen to partner with you to ensure the most successful school year for your child.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the ES office.  Thank you for your flexibility and support.
