Swimming

SWIM SUITS

Girls should wear a one-piece swim suit. Boys may wear Speedos, trunks or knee length Lycra suits; however, they should not wear bathing suits that are below their knees. Please make sure the condition of your suit is suitable. T-Shirts are not allowed. To ensure that the children do not forget their swim suits, all students can leave their suits hanging in a designated place at the pool. When they arrive for their next lesson, the suits will be there, dry and waiting for them. Please write your name clearly on your bathing suit.

GOGGLES & CAPS:

Some students prefer to swim with goggles and some not. You can make do with basic, inexpensive goggles that are comfortable. Swimming Caps should be worn by all students with long hair as it makes swimming comfortable and is much more practical. At the very least, long hair should be tied back. Again, the students will leave their goggles here at the pool until the swimming unit is complete. Please clearly write your name on the cap and goggles.

TOWELS:

We are very fortunate on having clean towels for all our students. Students do not need to bring their towels. Towels are provided and we ask all students to put the towels in the bin provided after use.

SICKNESS:

It is our policy in the PE department that if a child is attending school, then they must participate in physical activity. If you are well enough to be at school, then you are expected to participate in swimming.

This is a great opportunity for your child to receive professional and high quality instruction from a qualified and experienced aquatic staff, who will endeavor to provide a safe and friendly learning environment. Swimming is a life skill!!

Thank You

Mr Hossack

Turkey Trot

Thanksgiving is just around the corner which means that here at SAS the students have been preparing to face the challenge of the Turkey Trot!

This is an annual event where students from grade 3 to 8 challenge themselves physically and mentally by running a cross country course.  For the Grade 3’s to 5’s the course will be run around the school grounds and is around 1000 meters long.

We encourage students to set a personal goal for the run.  More then anything we want everyone to try and finish this physical challenge.  The students have been preparing for this event in their P.E. class and some have been doing some extra work at home.  It is great see the students work towards meeting this challenge.

The race will start at 1:20 on the soccer field inside the track.  The grade 3 classes will be sent off first, followed by the grade 4’s and then the grade 5’s.  The finish for all the races will be on the middle school field.

Students should bring a water bottle, comfortable running clothing, proper shoes and a extra snack on the day.  Please feel free to come out and cheer the runners on as they work hard to complete this challenge.

New this year the lower elementary students will be participating in their own Turkey Trot during their P.E. classes.

Elementary P.E. at SAS

The year is off to a great start and the students seem energized and attentive in class.  There is a new face in the P.E. department, replacing Mr T is Eric Nicolai, who has been teaching P.E. over at Puxi. He will be a great asset and along with Mr Magsi we hope to provide your students with a quality P.E. program.

IMG_0038

Our program focuses on getting students moving at a moderate to vigorous intensity, teaches fundamental skills, provides them with experiences that help them develop grit and lastly gives them an opportunity to develop cooperative and competitive skills.  All this while they are having fun and achieving some of their daily recommended activity time.

In P.E. classes we have three expectations of the students.

  1. Students are expected to get active, work up a sweat, get their heart rates up and be breathing rapidly by the end of every class
  2. Students are expected to listen to instructions and follow them
  3. Students are expected to challenge themselves and take risks in their learning in P.E.

In order for students to be able to meet these expectations and be well prepared for class we need them to bring running shoes, a water bottle and clothing that they can move in.

The students the first week were really good and most did have proper shoes.  “Crocs”, sandals and heeled footwear make it extremely difficult for students to move safely in P.E. or out at recess when they are playing. In the first three days of class there were still a few too many students that left there water bottle at home.  It is vital for students, especially in P.E. class to keep hydrated when working at such a high intensity.

IMG_0784

Lastly, if your child is not well enough to participate in PE class then please send a doctor’s note in with them so they can be excused.  If they do not have a doctor’s note I will send them to the nurse to get them checked out.  If they are at school they are expected to participate fully in all classes, including P.E.  Thank you.

The first unit for all my classes will be swimming.  After that we will move into a footwork/striking unit and a Parkour unit in the mat room.  It is shaping up to be a fantastic year.  If you have any questions please email at scott.hossack@saschina.org.

Swimming Session #1

IMG_0814

The Swimming unit starts on Monday, August 18th for all GRADE 5’s, GRADE 4’s and Grade 2’s.  Five very qualified swim instructors will guide the students through a Red Cross program focused on stroke development and water safety.

Your child needs to bring

  • A swim suit (one piece for girls and no long board shorts for boys)
  • A bathing cap
  • Goggles

Please make sure that items are named.  The students are asked to leave their suits hanging to dry after each lesson.  Students do not have to bring a towel as the school will provide the students with towels each lesson.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me.

Thanks

Scott Hossack

Soccer Days and Swimming

Just a reminder that my PE classes will start swimming on May 14th.

This will be our final unit for the year.  Please have your child bring in their bathing suit ( named), goggles and swim cap.  It works best if the students leave their suits at the pool to dry.   A reminder if your child can not swim then please send a Doctor’s note with them to explain the issue so that I can provide a modified program.

I always enjoy seeing the progress and growth the students have made from the beginning of the year.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Lastly our Soccer Days have been changed

Grade 3 Soccer Day is Monday, May 19th

Grade 4 Soccer Day is Thursday, May 22nd

Grade 5 Soccer Day is Friday, May 23rd

You are welcome to come out and watch the SAS students play the other schools.  It should get started around 9:45 or 10:00 and finish by 1:15 to 1:30.  Hope to see you at this great event.
