Parent Update for May 27, 2016

Dear 5SH Parents,

A special thank you goes to the chaperons who helped with the fifth grade field trip to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum on Thursday.  We had a great trip and the children had some wonderful learning experiences.

IMG_3756 IMG_3757 IMG_3758 IMG_3760 IMG_3761

Next week will be another busy one for our fifth graders.  Band and orchestra students will need to bring their instruments for extra rehearsals on Monday and Tuesday.  The Fifth Grade Spring Concert will be on Wednesday morning at 9:00.  I have listened to the children practicing during rehearsals. They are amazing.  All the practicing that you have had to listen to this year is paying off in a big way.  Prepare for an outstanding concert on Wednesday morning.

The Fifth Grade Transition Ceremony will be Friday afternoon at 1:00.  This is a child-friendly event.  The children will wear their class t-shirts for the occasion.  Our room parents have been working to make this a memorable event for our students and parents.

Students need to return their Build Our Nation social studies books.

Parent Update for May 21, 2016

Dear 5SH Parents,

Last week the students had a successful field trip to the Shanghai Natural History Museum.  We had a little excitement on the return trip home when the bus was struck by a car following us. I am sure your fifth grader has told you about the incident.  I would like to thank our chaperons, Aidan’s mother, Chris’s mother, Matthew’s father, Naomi’s mother, and Shane’s grandmother for taking time from their busy schedules to support our trip.  Without your wonderful support, we would never be able to take the students to such a location for a learning experience.

Parent Update for May 15, 2015

Dear 5SH Parents,

Friday was a busy one for our fifth graders.  During the school day, we had our Fifth Grade Soccer Day.  After school, we had our Date with Dad event.  Both events had lots of smiles.  A good time was had by everyone at both events.

IMG_3735 IMG_3732 IMG_3724 IMG_3718

Next week there are a couple of events that I should mention.  On Tuesday, the fifth grade will be going on a field trip to the Shanghai Natural History Museum.  I am so pleased that we have six chaperons for our class.  The museum will likely be quite crowded at times and the more adult eyes we have on the students, a safer field trip for our children.  We will be leaving SAS at 9:00 a.m.  and will return between 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The children need to bring lunch, snack, drink and wear their dark blue class t-shirts

The second event that I would like to pass on to you is an invitation to join middle school parents for a meeting with the counselors on Thursday. Here is the invitation from the counselors:

Hello Middle School Parents!

You are invited to the final counselor coffee of the school year!

It’s the end of the year, and for many of the people in our community, it’s time for change.  We will take an in depth look at the transitions our kids experience and what we can do to support them and help them thrive before, during, and after the transition.  If you or your child are experiencing any type of significant transition, then this coffee is for you!

We will also be using our time to wish Ms. Kinsella “good luck” as she experiences her own transition.  Please come wish her a fond farewell and thank her for the years of great service she has provided our community.

See you on Thursday, May 19 at 10:00am in the Elementary School Library!

Warm regards,

John & Karen

Parent Update for May 7, 2016

Dear 5SH Parents,

Thank you for helping me feel appreciated during the events of Teacher Appreciation Week. Your continued support makes it a delight to teach at SAS.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to make it to our Open House on Friday.  I am proud of the growth that the students made working on this project.  The children learned the content of the simple machines unit of science as well as made great progress in working together as group members.  They also demonstrated how well they could adapt their presentations to changes in audience.

Learning to use power tools was an exciting part of the project for several students.

Monday, the students participated in the Rube Goldberg Junkyard War Beyonda Box activity.  That activity introduced us to our new science unit on simple machines.  The children are working on creating a Rube Goldberg inspired machine that will raise one or more flags using simple machines.  Instead of four weeks of regular science classes, we are doing four days of intense science classes.  The students are having short mini-lessons and large blocks of work time for this project.  You are invited to share in our celebration of the unit with our Open House to see the students’ contraptions on Friday, May 6th  from 2:15 – 3:00.

Parent Update for April 15, 2016

Dear 5SH Parents,

Whew!  What a week it has been for our fifth graders.  M.A.P. tests are almost completed. A few students will complete the tests next week.  We should have the results finalized in a few weeks after all testing is completed on both SAS campuses.

I am sure that you have heard from your child about the puberty talks on Thursday afternoon.  The heating/air conditioning system is usually converted on April 15th.  The classrooms were a bit warm and that made it clear that many of our fifth graders need to start using deodorant.  In addition to the usual puberty lessons, that was a powerful lesson in growth and development.

On Tuesday,  our fifth graders will be participating in science learning activities in the high school.  The children need to wear their dark blue grade 5 t-shirts.

Today you should have received an Email from the school asking you to fill out a survey on your child’s teachers on PowerSchool.  Please fill one out on me.  I appreciate any input that helps me grow as a teacher.  The survey will be open from April 18th – April 29th

The information you offer will be confidential.  The feedback will go to me and will be shared with our elementary principal, Mr. Allen.

Parent Update for April 8, 2016

Dear 5SH Parents,

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend your fifth grader’s Student Led Parent Conference.  It was a great time for our students to reflect on their learning.  I enjoyed seeing the pride in the children’s faces as they shared their successes and goals with you.

Next week, will be a busy one for the students.  On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday the students will be taking their spring M.A.P. tests.

On Tuesday morning, the children will meet our next visiting author, Magaret Peterson Haddix.  Mrs. Haddix books are on sale in the Middle School library.   Mrs. Haddix has received the International Reading Association Children’s Book Award, some ALA listings on Best Books for Young Adults and Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers, The National Kids Award, and readers’ choice lists in more than 29 states.

On Thursday afternoon, the students will have their puberty talks.

The children are collecting junk for our next Beyonda Box, ‘The Goldberg Junkyard War’ on April 25th. Students need to bring in: large boxes, small boxes, clean plastic containers, dry plastic bottles, and cardboard tubes.  Please do not send in any objects made of glass or have sharp edges. For every ten items that a child brings in, they will get a lucky draw ticket for a chance to win prizes that will be given on the day of the Goldberg Junkyard War.

Special Dates:

April 11th – M.A.P. Testing: Language Arts

April 12th – Margaret Peterson Haddix presents to the fifth graders

April 13th – M.A.P. Testing: Mathematics
