Summer campus access

As the summer holiday approaches the facility and safety department are getting ready for many projects.  While everyone is away the teams that remain on campus are busily working to get cleaning, remodeling, construction, and repairs done.  The Puxi campus will be undergoing the HS renovation project along with air handling unit replacements in the middle school.  The major projects on the Pudong campus will be the elementary early years wing along with the replacement of air handling units in the middle schools.  There are many other smaller projects running at the same time.

During this break, no parents or students will be allowed access to campus unless they are enrolled in the discovery programs.

Enjoy your holiday and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Updated Air Quality guidelines

Good morning,

With recent enhancements to the air quality monitoring process the guidelines have been updated.  They are attached here, Air Quality Guidelines 5-20-16, and include the changes related to an, “automated” system.  The readings are no longer taken manually by the nurses.

The intent is to have more timely notification of the environmental changes occurring on both campuses.

Personal Safety

Good day SAS community,

There was a recent incident in the Jinqiao area that I want to make you all aware of.  A high school student from a local International School was walking home after an event Saturday night around 10:15pm.  The information reported to me from a school administrator was,

“The student passed a man sitting on his scooter at the closed walk-on gate from Green Villas on Huangyang Road across from the school.  The man’s behavior made the student uncomfortable and she called her mother who was on her way to meet their child.  The mother advised the girl to stay on the phone and keep walking toward her.  After the mother and daughter were reunited the man continued to follow them on his scooter and was fondling himself as he passed them.  The mother yelled at the man and tried to capture his face and/or scooter on her camera.  He then turned around and left the scene.”

The police were immediately notified of the incident and are investigating.

As the Jinqiao school relayed to their parents we would also,

“Encourage parents to talk through safe behaviors with their children.  These would include:

  • Having a phone and calling a parent when a situation feels uncomfortable.
  • Avoiding areas where there are few people.
  • Traveling with a buddy versus being alone.

While incidents like this are rare in Shanghai, they do remind us that we are in a major city.  We would encourage parents to attend events that your child is participating in at the school or wait on school property until they are picked up.  When this is not possible be sure that they are with a buddy.”

I share this with the entire school community as this could happen in the Minhang area as well.

Have a good weekend, Happy Halloween and stay safe.

Air in Pudong

Good morning, what a week it has been for SAS.  Rain, flooding, power outages, and now a bit of an odor in the air at Pudong.  Despite all of this, students only missed a small amount of learning time, no one was injured and long term property damage was minimal.

When I first started at SAS in July of 2013, we began a long and challenging process to close down an illegal plastic factory that was operating across the golf course from school.  With the help of many of you, the Links, and the local and city governments, we were able to shut them down.  I have personally visited the factory numerous times and can confirm that indeed, it had closed.

With the smell in the air Friday I though it would be good to check in with everyone.

Long story short, one of the largest sewer treatment plants for Shanghai is located to the North of the SAS Pudong campus.  It has been there for a few years and I was notified late last school year that this facility would be increasing in size and processing capacity.

When the wind blows to the southwest and the air pressure is right, the smell from the sewer treatment plant flows right through campus.  It isn’t pleasant but for the most part it doesn’t penetrate the building envelope and the interior of the school still smells like books, kids and a regular learning environment.

We have had no reports from the Links staff, residents or the local government to suggest that the plastic factory has reopened.  If I hear more I will keep everyone posted.

On days when the air is poor or it’s cloudy and gray, a look at this video reminds me how nice it is to be in Pudong.
