Short and Sweet – May 20, 2016

Dear Parents,

As the year is coming quickly to a close, there are fewer and fewer items to post and notify you about.  Most important for the upcoming week is the 2nd Grade “Books To Eat” celebration in the library on Tuesday – May 24th.  Your support for this activity with your child is most appreciated.  All creations should be brought to the library Tuesday morning for display.  If you need any clarification, please go to the librarian’s elementary blog site for information and pictures.

All the second grade students will be completing research and planning for their chosen ecosystem animal and plant by Tuesday.  Then the fun begins as they create these animals and plants for the second hallway.

The only other important date for now is the Summer Sizzler – which will take place on June 1st. with June 2nd being the rain date.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend,

Cecelia Wolf

Happy Mother’s Day!

Dear Parents,

First, I would like to wish all our mothers a Happy Mother’s Day!  As all the teachers on Team2Gether are mothers, we realize what an important role we all play in our children’s lives.  Thank you for all your support for our learning community here in second grade.

This week was highlighted by our students participating in China Alive activities organized by the Chinese teachers.  Monday and Tuesday of the upcoming week will offer two more activities, “Food Day” on Monday, and a Performance Day on Tuesday.

The students will begin the research for their chosen ecosystem on Monday.  The following week,  the second grade hallway will be transformation  into a rainforest, an ocean, and a savanna.  Please keep those recyclables coming in.  The students will use them to design and construct their ecosystems.

Thank you for the many donations that were sent in for the fifth grade movie night project to raise money for the Syrian refugees.  The students who have bought tickets will need to remember to bring snack money on Friday for some treats that will be available.

Important dates and/or information:

Movie Night – Friday – May 13th

Summer Sizzzler – Wednesday June 1st. (rain date – June 2nd.)

**Notice about the Girl Scout “book swap”
Book Swap Grades 1 – 5

The Girl Scouts are organizing a book swap for grades 1 – 5. A book swap is an opportunity for the students to exchange books that they have outgrown for books that are new to them. It is also a good example of “reusing” and “reducing”, which is good for our environment.

From Monday, May 9 – Wednesday May 11 children in grades 1 – 5 can bring in gently used books for children of any age to their classroom teachers.

For each book your child brings in, he or she will receive a token for the day of the swap. The Girl Scouts will collect, sort and organize the books.

On Thursday May 12 the books will be displayed in the elementary cafeteria for the students to browse. The children can take one book for each token they have.

We welcome you to drop off as may books as you would like for the swap, but there will be a limit of 10 books that a child can take. Leftover books will be donated. If you have any questions, please contact Maureen Lyon at Maureen.a.lyon@gmail.com.

Thank you for your support and participation!

The SAS Pudong Girl Scouts
Troop 5866

Please support the Girl Scouts by having you child bring in some gently used books.

Enjoy the day – moms,

Cecelia Wolf

May 1,2016 update

Dear Parents,

Team 2Gether  had a great visit to the Sky Farm School at Anken Green.   Yes, it did rain, but the staff and students carried on with the planned activities.  They learned how to mix  a good soil and planted either lettuce or coriander in a cup which was brought back to school. They learned about the importance of renewable materials through composting, and they made observations and wrote a “plant poem”.  These “hands-on” activities were very good complements to our plant studies at school.

This week as well as May 9th and 10th., the second grade students will be involved in activities organized by the Chinese teachers for China Alive.  They will include:  “Chinese Sports Day”, “Chinese Board Games”, “Carnival Day”, “Food Day”, and a “Performance Day”.

The only important date for this week is May 3rd. which marks the beginning of the swimming unit in PE.  Please remember to send your child to school with their swimsuit (labeled with their name).  Goggles and swim caps are optional, and the towels are provided by the school.

I hope everyone has enjoyed this long weekend.

Happy Earth Day!

Dear Parents,

Team 2Gether has had a very busy week.  We began by welcoming Ms. Covell back to our learning community.

We had a session with the visiting author Mrs. Haddix, who shared some of her life stories about how she found the subjects and characters for her writing.  She also, emphasized the importance of the writing process with particular attention to revising pieces of work constantly.  Write – Think  – Write – Think and Think more.

The Landform Projects were completed  on Monday.  During the afternoon, students strolled through the project area and visited classrooms viewing and appreciating each other’s work.

Today, our students were treated to an Earth Day activity led by the Roots and Shoots Club.  The activity culminated with each student planting a flowering plant or a bean plant in a community garden area.  Today’s activity was a great  learning experience that will tie in to our field trip on Monday.(see slide show below)

** Please Remember To Check ** students’ Home Learning Folders for a letter detailing Monday’s field trip to the Sky Farm.

Next week is Spirit Week and details for each day are below:

 Spirit Week – April 25th to 29th

Monday – Pajama Day(except for our second graders)
Tuesday – School Colors Day or Eagle Wear
Wednesday – Worldly Wednesday (clothing or colors from your home country)
Thursday – Sports Day (Sporty clothes or favorite sports team)
Friday – House Shirts

Finally, a sincere thank you to all the parents who helped make our “teacher appreciation lunch” something to remember!  (and savor) It was most appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Wolf

April 8, 2016

Dear Parents,

The students of Team 2Gether did an outstanding job in their Student Led Conferences.  The second grade teachers are very proud of their students.  More importantly, we want to thank all the parents who participated in the conferences.  Through your cooperation and support, students’ engagement in the learning process is made more authentic and stronger.  We hope all parents enjoyed reading the newly published non-fiction books, and after visiting the specialists(Art, PE, etc.) have a better understanding and appreciation for your child’s learning community.  Thank you again.

In Social Studies, students will be working this week to complete their “landform” projects.  They have all chosen either a technology, poster, or “build-up” format for their  project presentation.  They will also, complete a map assessment on the world’s continents and oceans.

In math, a new unit on Measurement is being introduced with an introduction of standard and non-standard units.

In Literacy, exploration of Folktales continues and students have begun to work on the writing component in which students will  be engaged in writing their own folktale, legend, fairytale, tall tale, trickster tale, porquoi tale, or myth.

Enjoy the weekend,

Cecelia Wolf
