Bonding Day Update

In the event of rain tomorrow, we will make the call about whether or not to cancel Bonding Day for all grade levels by 7:45 am.  If that happens, we will hold regular classes and have a Day A schedule.  Teachers realize that most students will not have their laptops and will plan accordingly.

This month we will be hearing from Laura Fishman and Mark Ginder, Subject Area Leaders for Humanities. They will discuss the philosophy behind our Humanities program and the curriculum involved.

Our Librarian, Barbara Boyer and I will follow, with a discussion of literacy and tips for parents who want to help their children build their reading skills.

We will meet in the Middle School/ High School Library. Please join us.

Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth

RE: JHU-CTY 2016-17 Fall Information Session at SAS Pudong (Sep 27)

Dear Parents,

Greetings from the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY)! As part of the Johns Hopkins University, CTY conducts the oldest and most extensive university-based Talent Search by offering an above-grade level testing to the 2nd to 8th graders worldwide. For academically advanced students who qualify, CTY offers challenging summer and online programs.

In the coming fall, we will host an information session at Shanghai American School (Pudong). The schedule is as below:

Date: September 27, 2016 (Tuesday)

Time: 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Venue: LLH, SAS Pudong Campus

During the session, we will provide first-hand information about CTY summer and online programs, including their benefits to the students and how to qualify. Come and check us out! We look forward to seeing you on the day!

Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

What a lovely weekend we just had; it was an absolute gift!  I hope you and your children were able to get out together, have some fun, and enjoy the weather.

On Wednesday we will host our Open House.  We are asking 6th grade parents to arrive at 5:00 to meet with the 6th grade team.  At 5:30, there will be Schoology trainging.  Afterwards, we will send you off to meet your student’s teachers.  Please be aware that we will run buses for families. Details will be posted soon.  There will also be sandwhiches and snacks for you in the lobby of the PAC, where we will start.

On September 7th, all of the students will be participating in Bonding Day. This is an opportunity for our students and teachers to engage in some team-building, as well as giving them an alternative venue in which to get to know each other.  Bonding Day looks very different at each grade level, but each involves spending the bulk of the day off-campus.  Please anticipate receiving materials about this some time this week.

Our next principal’s coffee will be on September 13th at 10:30 in the library.  I will announce the topic for discussion next week, but anticipate that it will include ways that you can help your child develop his or her literacy skills.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Wednesday Swim Club

Dear Parents:

The Wednesday Swim Club will be starting on Wednesday, August 31st.  This is for students who did not make the SAS swim team and want to improve their swimming strength. This is not a beginners “Learn to Swim” lesson so all swimmers should be able to swim at least two strokes for 25 meters.  Please see the letter attached and that should answer all your questions.  If you have any additional questions, please contact me directly and not your classroom teacher at:Wednesday SASPD Swim Club 2016

Principal’s Weekly Update

Dear Parents and Families,

Last week was our first full week of school, and we kept the kids hopping!  There is definitely a transition from summer to school, so you may have noticed your child needing to rest up a bit over the weekend.

We had our first Principal’s Coffee on Tuesday, and were pleased with the turnout.  All told, we counted approximately 80 parents in attendance.  Those who arrived early learned how to access library books through Over Drive, and then we were given an overview of Schoology.

Likewise the PTSA Welcome Back was well attended.  Because there is information about our priorities and changes this year, Principal Coffee dates and times, and Open House information, I will post the Power Point from our presentation.

Finally, we had a surprise for our students this morning.  David Archuleta, runner up of the 2008 American Idol season performed for our students.  He spoke to the students about why he had selected each song, revealing how each held a deep importance for him.  Mr. Poulin took notes during Mr. Archuleta’s explanations, and discovered that much of what he said relates directly to our mission and vision:

1. Find the light in people.
2. Follow your heart.
3. Know and understand your roots to help discover who you are.
4. Collaborate to learn how to express yourself in new ways.
5. Find joy in your work!
6. Listen to the symphony of your life and you’ll discover your purpose, and perhaps like David Archuleta, even discover your dream.

MS Photo Days


August 25th & August 26th are Middle School photo days

Tuesday, August 23rd, your child will bring home an order form from the school photographer.

Students will be coming out of their Physical Education classes to have the school pictures taken.

Should you choose to order photos, the form and payment must be brought to school on the day of photos and given directly to the photographer. Please do not send money in advance as teachers will not be collecting it.

This year, we are adding the option for online orders also, for the parents that would like to review the photograph before purchase.

How this will work is, after the photo days, the photographer will be uploading the images to a secure online gallery. The password for the school gallery will be shared with you and along with the link to parents and students. You will then be able to log in and pay with credit card. All online orders will be bundled and shipped to the school for distribution, just like the pre-orders. We hope that the online orders will be successful, and we can move to an online only model for the future.

We are still offering the pre-orders this year for our current customers who are used to this aspect.

Microcampus Information

Microcampus for Pudong Grade 8 Students, 2016-2017 School Year

Students and Parents,

Thank you for your interest in one of this year’s Microcampus trips for SAS Pudong Grade 8 students. The hope is that the information below will help families learn what they need to know to be ready to go ahead with the process of applying for the one of the Pudong Grade 8 student trips this school year, which take place on the following dates:

  • November 19-December 16, 2016
  • April 29-May 26, 2017

To move forward with the application process for either (or both) of trips, please do the following:

Students and Parents, it is important that you know as much about the program in order to make a wise decision about moving forward with the application process. A great place to start is theFrequently Asked Questions portion of the Microcampus website. Also, feel free to browse around the Microcampus Website to see student project work, daily journals, and photos from previous groups. Please send any questions you might have to Mr. Craig Tafel, Microcampus Coordinator, at

Students who might be interested in applying for one of this year’s two Microcampus trips will need to attend one of three information sessions. Please look ahead at your schedule and be on time for one of these three sessions:

  • Tuesday, August 16, 11:15 PM. Bring your lunch and laptop to Ms. Fishman’s’s classroom (M313) . . . OR
  • Tuesday, August 16, 3:05 PM. Bring your lunch and laptop to Ms. Fishman’s classroom (M313). . . OR
  • Thursdsay, August 18, 11:15 PM. Bring your lunch and laptop to Ms. Fishman’s classroom (M313)

After interested students have attended one of the above sessions, Students and Parents will need to attend one of following information sessions to continue the application process:

  • Monday, August 22, 3:15 PM. Students, bring your laptops and parents to the Library Lecture Hall (LLH) . . . OR
  • Monday, August 22, 5:00 PM. Students, bring your laptops and parents to the Library Lecture Hall (LLH) . . . OR

After that, parent portions of the application will be due on Saturday, August 27 at 1:00 PM. Group lists will be posted on or before September 16th.
