Don’t be scared 5JS

Parents,
I hope you had a safe and scary weekend! The parade was a great success. Thank you to all the parents who came and brought snacks for the students and made the event a great success!
Parent Conferences
Conferences are next week, November 5th (Thursday after school) and 6th (Friday until 3pm). The sign-up through Powerschool is now open;  you can click and sign-up online. Your student WILL be attending the conference with you that day. If none of the times available work for you, please let me know and we can arrange an alternate date. Due to Parent Conferences, there will be no school on Friday 6th November.
Book Fair
The ES Book Fair begins in the library next Monday. Our class will visit the Book Fair on Tuesday (3nd Nov). Books range between about 30rmb and 120rmb. Students will also be allowed to return to the Fair to purchase books at recess time throughout the week.

Beautiful week/weekend!

Spirit Week

5JS students can show their school spirit all week this week, starting with Pajama Day on Monday. Students are reminded that even though we want to see them showing school spirit, costumes cannot hinder them from participating in all their usual lessons – like PE.

Back to school night!

Parents,

I hope you had a nice weekend. We have gotten into the swing of things here at school. Math has started and social studies will begin this week. There are plenty of things happening in 5th grade!

In math right now, we are on Unit 1 and working on our number sense. It is important that your child has a firm grasp of multiplication and division. These are the foundations for our math this year.

In social studies, we will begin our colonization unit. This unit will be incorporating some role playing by the students. It will be loads of fun!

Wednesday is also our back to school night. I hope to see many faces in the classroom on the 9th. I am excited to see you and we have a special night planned for all the parents!

This week is also our photo taking day. If you want a set of photos of your child, please return the photo taking sheet that was given out last week.

As always, you can write a note to me through the agenda book or email me with any questions. Thank you and see you Tuesday!

Wet Weekend!

Parents,

I hope you all had a nice weekend. It was wet here in Shanghai and it is raining/flooding right now as we speak! Please drive carefully.

Last week, the students spent some time in their writing journals working on their stamina for writing. In 5th grade, students are expected to be able to write for 30 minutes without stopping. As with many things, this requires practice and work. We are currently at the 20 minute mark and will be working our way towards 30 minutes soon.

This week, students will start to get into the Math journals. Your child will be starting to bring home some work books to do their assignments in. Eagle leader forms are also due by tomorrow. If your child is interested in this leadership role, they Must turn it in by tomorrow.

Thank you for your cooperation in this partnership!

Eagle Leaders

Looking for Eagle Leaders!

Hey 5th graders, would you like a great opportunity to:

  • represent your class and your school by being a voice for others?
  • help our community by initiating and getting involved in important service projects?
  • develop your leadership skills and make new friends with other student leaders?

You might be interested in being an Eagle Leader! We are asking students who would like to make a difference at SAS to make application for our first semester Eagle Leaders Program. Here’s how:

Eagle Leader Timeline: Fall 2015

Friday, August 21: 5th grade assembly to announce purpose of Eagle leaders and the application process. Students take parent permission letter home.

Wednesday, August 26: Students fill out application in library during recess.

Wednesday, September 2: Finalists are announced. Letters sent to parents of all finalists explaining the Eagle Leader commitment and expectations.

Wednesday, September 9: First meeting with Semester 1 Eagle Leaders.

Welcome to 5JS!

Parents,

I hope your child had a great week back at school!

We spent a lot of time getting to know one another and will continue to do so for the next few weeks. I am proud to say that I have learned all the names already!  This week, students will continue to work on activities that will help foster our classroom team environment. Your child may have mentioned working on a collage at school. We will continue to work on those and complete them this week.

Please make sure the technology AUP forms are signed and returned. Students are not allowed to use the computer until they are signed and have agreed on our SAS tech policies.

unfortunately, my phone is acting up and I am unable to load photos from last week. Once I get it resolved, I will post the photos. Thank you for your patience.

Please email me with any questions comments. The agenda book is also a place where you can write me a message. Please also try to sign your child’s agenda book every night. They are aware of this expectation. Thank you!

Mr. Shuang

Welcome back!

Welcome Parents and Students!

Welcome to the fifth grade! I am happy to be your child’s teacher this year. I am excited to start my fifth year at SAS and am eager to begin working with the students. I grew up In the USA and Taipei. I have taught in the United States for 5 years before coming to Shanghai.  I can’t wait to see the class and get the year started! I normally attach a link full of photos from the week, so please keep up to date with all our news.

Philosophy

My goal is for students to have a successful year both academically and socially. I incorporate a strong value system centered around honesty, respect and responsibility. Through these values and a challenging curriculum, students are enabled to think critically and creatively, instilling confidence and independence in both their academic and social skills.

Homework

Students are expected to complete about 50 minutes of homework a night. Please check your child’s assignment journal every evening to make sure they are keeping up with the workload. If your child is having difficulty please send me a note in the journal and I will address it the next day. If your child needs more time on a particular assignment please write me a note explaining your circumstances. I understand that things come up and encourage that students have other interests outside the classroom.

Communication

I use a class blog that will be the main source of communicating information to you. Check for updates as the weeks progress; I plan on including important dates, class accomplishments and other class information that will answer most of your questions. You may also write notes in the agenda book as well. I will often write back in the space.

If you need to contact me, the best option is via email. My address is jay.shuang@saschina.org

Welcome to 5JS!
