Updates for the Week of 8 May

The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.

5 Weeks to Go! (But who’s counting?)

The end of the year is approaching rapidly, the weather is warming, and AP/IB exams have one more week to go.

This coming week will again be full of AP and IB exams and exam prep for 10-12th graders, even as normal classes continue for the 9th grade and for 10-12th grade non-AP/IB students. It’s quite important that we keep the areas around the test rooms quiet and as disruption-free as possible. Thanks to all for your cooperation with this and good luck to all of our exam-takers! The final exam schedule for non-AP and non-IB Year 2 classes is available here.

Please consider capping off your Friday and/or Saturday with the delightful Middle School musical production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown!

All 9th-11th graders will be traveling during the week of 15-19 May on ChinaAlive Trips or TheEleven. Please make sure that all necessary forms, approvals, and payments have been made. More information on the 9th and 10th grade trips can be found here: http://sites.saschina.org/pdhschinaalive . Or, for 11th graders, here: TheEleven. 11th grade families, please note that we will depart from school on Monday morning the 15th, so students should take their normal buses to school that day.

If you have not yet turned in your trip Medication Permission Form, Tuesday, May 9, is the cut-off for them to be turned in to your trip leader or the high school nurse. After next Tuesday, the form along with the medications must be turned in directly to your trip medical chaperone at your point of departure (school, airport, train station, etc.).

Once again, the Class of 2017 is demonstrating that the strengths of an SAS education translate into acceptances at the finest colleges and universities in the world. Our 2016-17 schoolwide college list is online and can be found here:

The list is updated weekly on Fridays.

Triathlon Monday, May 8th ASA busing:

The 4:30 ASA buses on Monday, May 8th will run on the same schedule, but the 5:30 buses will be held until the end of the Triathlon event (approximately 6:00). Students taking the 5:30 bus may arrive home a little bit later than normal. Thanks for supporting this great community event.

Please Read for End of Year Information

Please take a moment to download and read this important document. It contains information about the end of the school year including review days, exams, and student obligations from now until the last day of school. This information is extensive and somewhat complex. It is important to read it carefully and to keep it in mind as you plan for these next 7 weeks. Some key points are also covered below. Please read carefully.

FINAL EXAMS/LEAVING EARLY: Please note that the school year ends on June 9. It is very important for students to be able to say good-bye to departing friends – or leave themselves – in a positive way. We build in opportunities for kids to do that – to spend time together, to sign yearbooks, to see each of their teachers, to return all school property, etc. This can only happen if students are here. Therefore:

  • Please do not plan for your children to be absent during the week of Final Exams, May 31-June 7. Students should be prepared to attend school on any and all of those days; do not make travel arrangements that interfere with these important final exams. Students will not be granted early or late exams except in cases of extreme emergency or illness which is documented by a physician. Students must take final exams on the assigned days. We had planned to publish the exam schedule last week, but are still working out some final details and will publish it on Tuesday, May 2nd.
  • June 8 is an 8-block day when students complete their signouts and see each of their teachers, clean out lockers, etc. It is very important for all students to be in school on that day. All official school records will be held until a student signs out completely for the academic year.
  • June 9 is the last day. While we do not have regular classes on that day, we do have time for students to get together, say final good-byes, and enjoy a final end of year assembly together.

AP Exam Study Days

Note that AP exam students are allowed to take the calendar day immediately prior to an AP exam to stay home to study, or alternately teachers may schedule a required study session in school. On exam days, students may come and leave school at their leisure. After the exam day, students are expected to report to their AP class on schedule as before the exam.

Library Notices

The end of the School Year is in view. That means that there are some important library closing dates approaching.

ILL-Interlibrary Loan between Puxi and Pudong will end on May 2nd
All ILL Books need to be returned as rapidly after May 2nd as possible so that they can go back to the appropriate Library.

  • Seniors
All Books and library materials need to come in by May 2nd.
Senior Sign-outs will begin as soon as you get your sign-out paperwork— don’t wait until the last day.
  • Other Students/Parents
Last day for checkouts – May 26th.
All Student and Parent books in by May 31st.

Especially for Seniors and Parents of Seniors

The days are getting longer, temperatures are beginning to moderate, college acceptance letters are rolling in. We are moving closer and closer to graduation! Please take a look at the Class of 2017 Graduation Handbook which has important information, dates, timelines, and forms, all of which you will need to be ready for the big day: Sunday 28 May, 2017.

To answer a perennial question: “Does the school sponsor any Graduation Parties, trips, or other events such as group trips after Graduation?” The answer is “No.” While we welcome visits by our graduates back to school, any individual or group activities by groups of current Grade 12 students are individual or family-sponsored.
