Mathematics at SAS Parent Sessions @ 10AM & 5:30PM, PAC
As you may be aware, Shanghai American School adopted the Common Core Math Standards three years ago, and we have been using them as the foundation for student learning in math through grade 8.  Elementary school parents, for example, have seen that this year we are using new resources that are aligned to these math standards where we emphasize a balance of procedural and conceptual understanding, problem solving, explaining their reasoning, and using models to represent mathematical concepts. Next school year, will be the first year of Common Core Math implementation in the SAS high schools, which will impact the way in which we engage students in math learning starting in grade 8.  To ensure that you are fully informed about the structure of our math program, we will conduct the first in a series of Math Parent Education sessions on Thursday, May 5th in the Performing Arts Center (PAC).  To accommodate parents, we will offer the session twice on that date: 10:00 am and 5:30 pm.  We encourage you to attend one of these important sessions so that you will be better able to support your child as we engage in this transition.
