The Newcomers Committee. PTSA Puxi will be working with the Admissions Office and starting an initiative on the Newcomers Committee. We are looking for friendly SAS families to support the “Buddy Family System.” This system matches new SAS families with existing SAS families to ensure that no one is a stranger on the first day of school. The goal of the the program is to help newcomers feel comfortable as they ease into like in China, in Shanghai, or simply in SAS. If you are interested in being a friend/mentor, please contact Stacey LoFrano Harrison (sold@lofranorealty.com). Thank you for helping to welcome families to the SAS community.

Community Information Fair (CIF). PTSA is now accepting reservation requests for the Annual Community Information Fair Wednesday, August 24th. Grades 3-5 Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Parent Session on Tuesday, May 24 @ 8:10AM
MAP test results from the testing that occurred during the week of April 11-15 went home last week. SAS elementary and middle school students take these tests twice a year, in the fall and spring. These tests help SAS educational professionals determine each child’s instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of reading, mathematics and language usage. MAP results are reported as RIT scores. The RIT score is an equal-interval scale, like feet and inches, which is independent of grade level. As a result, we can use the MAP results with our own SAS achievement data to measure growth in learning over time. Please note that further information about the MAP assessment is available for parents on our parent portal site: http://iwebpx.saschina.org/sasmap/MAP/Home.html

Mathematics at SAS Parent Sessions @ 10AM & 5:30PM, PAC
As you may be aware, Shanghai American School adopted the Common Core Math Standards three years ago, and we have been using them as the foundation for student learning in math through grade 8.  Elementary school parents, for example, have seen that this year we are using new resources that are aligned to these math standards where we emphasize a balance of procedural and conceptual understanding, problem solving, explaining their reasoning, and using models to represent mathematical concepts. Next school year, will be the first year of Common Core Math implementation in the SAS high schools, which will impact the way in which we engage students in math learning starting in grade 8.  To ensure that you are fully informed about the structure of our math program, we will conduct the first in a series of Math Parent Education sessions on Thursday, May 5th in the Performing Arts Center (PAC).  To accommodate parents, we will offer the session twice on that date: 10:00 am and 5:30 pm.  We encourage you to attend one of these important sessions so that you will be better able to support your child as we engage in this transition.

2016-17 CLASSROOM PLACEMENT UPDATE FOR PARENTS
During the upcoming weeks, teams of teachers and counselors will begin creating class lists for the 2015-16 school year. When planning classrooms for next year the homeroom teachers and counselors will divide the children into balanced groups. Class lists will then be posted the afternoon before the first day of school (August 10, 2016).  Creating well balanced, heterogeneous classroom groups is our comprehensive goal at SAS. Some, not all, of the more important factors in creating that balance include:

  • balanced number of boys and girls
  • strong English skills vs. less developed English skills
  • a mix of students from varying academic levels
  • a good social blend of students
  • appropriate schedule accommodations for special services
  • representation from various nationalities
  • individual student issues

As all of our teachers are well-qualified and able to meet the needs of all students currently enrolled at SAS, we respectfully ask that parents do not make requests regarding a specific teacher.  All SAS students should be able to be successful in any one of our classroom communities.

As we want your child to flourish while attending Shanghai American School, your input as our partner in education is important.  If there is any important or relevant information that you think your classroom teacher or counselor may not have that you feel would be helpful to consider as we make placement decisions for next year, please pick up a ES Student Information for 2016-17 Classroom Placement Parent Form from the ES Office (or download it from here http://sites.saschina.org/espuxi/files/2016/04/Parent-Placement-Form-April-2016-PDF-1ehkemz.pdf) so it can be submitted to the ES Office prior to Friday, April 29, 2016.  The information you provide will be shared with the Classroom Placement Team which includes the current and future grade level teams, counselors, and administration.

We have an excellent teaching team and we will ensure that your child is placed into a well-balanced classroom. We will take into account the information you provide when placing your child, however the information provided does not guarantee placement in a particular teacher’s classroom.

Gr. 3-5 Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Testing is This Week
This week students in grades 3-5 will take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test. SAS elementary and middle schools currently administer these tests twice a year in the fall and spring. These tests help SAS educational professionals determine your child’s instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of reading, mathematics and language usage. Your child’s MAP results will be reported as RIT scores.

Sign Up for April 7 & 8 Student Led Conferences via PowerSchool
Student Led Conferences will be after school on Thursday, April 7 and all day on Friday, April 8. Sign up for the day and time that is best for you and your child via PowerSchool.

Student Led Conferences are on April 7th & 8th
Your elementary school child and his/her teachers are working together to prepare for their Student Led Conferences on April 7 and 8. Just like last year, your child will play an important role in the conferences and is required to attend.

If you have never participated in a Student Led Conference you might be asking, “What is this all about?” or “Why are children being included in conferences?” You might even be wondering when you are going to get a chance to “really talk” with the teacher about your child. We, too, have asked these questions and have spent a great deal of time researching and discussing the benefits to ensure that our teaching/learning/assessing/reporting process is at the forefront of current educational theory and practice. Conferences which include the child have been used for many decades and their efficacy for promoting optimal student outcomes has been well documented over time.

At Shanghai American School, we believe that children are in charge of their learning and we give them many opportunities to know that they are capable and that they can influence what happens to them. During the annual April Student Led Conferences your child will lead all aspects of the conference; together with your child you will discuss all areas of the child’s behavior and learning with openness and transparency so that children continue to feel empowered and responsible for their behavior and learning.
The Student Led Conference format has a different look and feel than the October student-parent-teacher conferences. During each 45-minute time slot there will be 3-4 families in the classroom, creating a more relaxed environment and giving parents more time to engage in the presentation of their child’s work.

On Thursday, April 7, teachers will be available for conferences between 3:00-5:30pm. On Friday, April 8, conferences will be scheduled between 8:00-3:00pm. School will be dismissed at the regular time (3:00pm) on Thursday, April 7, and there will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 8.

Chinese & Specialist Teachers: Specialist teachers also follow a Student Led Conference model. PE teachers will be in the ES gym to supervise student-led activities. Chinese, Art and Music teachers will be in their rooms to welcome students who bring their parents to share what they have been learning in class. If you wish to arrange a conference with your child’s Learning Support (LS) or English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher, please contact the teacher directly.

Your child’s guidance counselor is also available to meet with you while you are on campus for your conference. Please stop by to see Amanda Fischer (PK-Grade 1), Joseph Hill (Grades 2/3), and Faith Ro (Grades 4/5).
