Band Concert & Summer Sizzler

To Sizzle, or Not to Sizzle…

That is the question. However, what would the end of the year be without our tradition of the Summer Sizzler. I may look a little different, it may be a bit dirtier but it will still be chock full of fun. The plan is, unless it will be dangerous or miserable, we will have the Summer Sizzler tomorrow! To best plan for the day…

  1. Students should plan on getting wet and muddy. Wear clothes appropriate for getting wet and dirty.
  2. Bring a towel (labeled with the students name)
  3. Bring an extra set of clothes in a plastic bag if the student chooses to change and has a bag for the dirty clothes.

Looking forward to tomorrow!

Book Swap & Dates, Dates, Dates

Book Swap for 1st – 5th Grade

The Girl Scouts are organizing a book swap for grades 1 – 5. A book swap is an opportunity for the students to exchange books that they have outgrown for books that are new to them. It is also a good example of “reusing” and “reducing”, which is good for our environment.

From Monday, May 9 – Wednesday May 11 children in grades 1 – 5 can bring in gently used books for children of any age to their classroom teachers.

For each book your child brings in, he or she will receive a token for the day of the swap. The Girl Scouts will collect, sort and organize the books.

On Thursday May 12 the books will be displayed in the elementary cafeteria for the students to browse. The children can take one book for each token they have.

We welcome you to drop off as may books as you would like for the swap, but there will be a limit of 10 books that a child can take. Leftover books will be donated. If you have any questions, please contact Maureen Lyon at Maureen.a.lyon@gmail.com.

Thank you for your support and participation!

Building Community – Thank You!

Thank you, Dads!

“To be in your children’s memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today.” – Anonymous

Last Friday, April 22nd, Pudong Elementary School hosted our annual “Date with Dad” event. We had over 250 people participate in the event that included a wide variety of activities such as playing board games, building forts, playing gaga ball, noodle samurai wars, and many of the Dads’ favorite… being “rolled” in the bubble balls. It was an afternoon of fun and connections and one that many of our students will recall when they think back on their elementary years. We want to thank the Dads and guests who came out to participate in this event. And a very special thank you goes to two special staff members, Eric Nicolai and Magsi Magsumbol, without their creativity, hard work, and dedication, this event would not have been possible.

Be sure to turn in your mission sheet for the Date with Dad raffle to win a dinner date with dad at Blue Frog!

Teacher Appreciation Week – Thank you to the PTSA!

Thank-You-message2_edited-1Build Community: We will build a strong community of educators, parents, and students knowing that the quality of relationships in the community is a direct and key determinant of the quality of student learning. A huge thank you to our Pudong PTSA for organizing an amazing Teacher Appreciation week. Pudong Elementary teachers and teaching assistants very much appreciated all lovely food and gifts that were prepared last week. We would also like to thank all of the parents who supervised children during the lunch hour so that our faculty and staff could attend the Luncheon on Thursday. We are so lucky to be part of a community that comes together to support one another.

Student Placement Forms

During the upcoming weeks, teams of teachers and counselors will begin creating class lists for the 2015-16 school year. When planning classrooms for next year the homeroom teachers and counselors will divide the children into balanced groups. Class lists will then be posted the afternoon before the first day of school (August 12th, 2015).

Creating well-balanced, heterogeneous classroom groups is our comprehensive goal at SAS. Some, not all, of the more important factors in creating that balance include:

  • Balanced number of boys and girls
  • Strong English skills vs. less developed English skills
  • A mix of students from varying academic levels
  • A good social blend of students
  • Appropriate schedule accommodations for special services
  • Representation from various nationalities
  • Individual student issues

As we want your child to flourish while attending Shanghai American School, your input as our partner in education is important.  If there is any important or relevant information that you think your classroom teacher or counselor may not have that you feel would be helpful to consider as we make placement decisions for next year, please pick up a Student Placement Form from the ES Office so it can be submitted to the ES Office prior Friday, May 6th, 2016. The information you provide will be shared with the 2016-17 Classroom Placement Team, which includes the grade level teams, counselors, and administrators.

We respectfully ask that parents do not make requests for a specific teacher. As the school grows, teachers shift grade levels, some leave, and new staff arrives. SAS is committed to employing teachers who are well qualified and able to meet the needs of all students enrolled at the school. Requests for a specific teacher will not be considered. All SAS students should be able to be successful in any one of our classroom communities.

We have an excellent teaching team and we will ensure that your child is placed into a well-balanced classroom. We will take into account the information you provide when placing your child, however the information provided does not guarantee placement in a particular teacher’s classroom.

Warm regards,

Shawn Colleary

Principal for the Day & More Authors

Our Principal for the Day!

Yesterday, second grader Ava Smith enjoyed a fabulous day as Pudong Elementary’s Principal! In mid February a wild bidding war was had during a live auction at our PTSA Quiz Night. And Ava’s parents won the with the highest bid! The prize: Ava would replace Mr. Colleary as Elementary Principal for a whole day!

Ava had a wonderful day fulfilling the role of our Elementary Principal! She greeted students in the morning, generously extended recess for the entire second grade (twice!), signed important papers, read books to our Early Childhood students, conducted important meetings, made decisions about our budget, and invited her friends to lunch in Mr. Colleary’s office!

She also wrote a contribution for our blog this week:

Top 10 Reasons I Love SAS by Principal Ava Smith

  1. I love recess because you get to play with your friends and have fun.
  2. I love the Library because there are so many different books you can choose from.
  3. I love art because you get to be creative.
  4. I love LLB because you get to learn new things from different places.
  5. I love the nature center because you get to explore nature.
  6. I love music because you get to have fun using musical instruments and create new sounds.
  7. I love PE because you get to play fun games and go swimming.
  8. I love my teachers because they are really nice to me.
  9. I love my friends because they are good friends to have and always keep me company.
  10. I love the DREAMS Lab because you get to make cool things and have fun doing it!

It was great to spend the day with such a lovely, smart, generous leader (and boss!). A special thank you to Ava’s parents, Melanie and Alan Smith, and the PTSA – the proceeds from February’s Quiz Night are being given to Shanghai American School’s Edge for Excellence Fund.
