So, how did pickleball get its name? This sport very similar to badminton, draws a lot of attention because of its name.
Pickleball is played using hard paddles and a perforated, plastic ball much like a waffle ball. Pickleball was invented in Washington in 1965, by two men, US Congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell. Returning from golf one afternoon, Pritchard and Bell found their families complaining of boredom. In an effort to combat their collective families’ boredom, Pritchard and Bell set out to create a new game. Thus, the answer to the question, “how did pickleball get its name?” is revealed. In Pritchard’s backyard Pritchard and Bell modified the game of badminton to suit the haphazard collection of badminton equipment that Pritchard had. As Pritchard and Bell were playing their new game with their families, Pritchard’s dog Pickles would chase after the balls and hide them in bushes. The name of the game became “Pickles’ Ball” which was then combined to become “pickleball.”
The sport was named Pickleball because it originated from the term pickle boat. Pickle boat is the last boat to go back to the dock with their catch (of fish). Somehow, the game reminded someone of pickle boats, where the oarsmen were picked out from the other boat groups.
The game pickle ball had nothing to do with the food, pickles. In 1965, a family were staying on an island and they had a dog named Pickle. Pickle liked to bury stray balls he found and hide them in the bushes. The game was frist called Pickle’s ball but then they shortened it to pickleball.
Pickleball is one of many racquet sports, it was played in a summer of 1965 of Bainbridge, Island, Washington. Two boys could not find the shuttle cock to play badminton, so instead they lowered the badminton net, using paddles of plywood and a whiffle ball. They called this pickle ball not because of the food, but because their dog was named Pickle.
Why is pickle ball called that?
Research shows that, pickle ball actually has nothing to do with the food, pickles. But, in Summer of 1965, the family dog, Pickles, gave some inspiration for the name of the game. Soon enough, the perfect name for this exciting game was, Pickle Ball. And the game has been evolutionary and played by many citizens since then.
GO PICKLE BALL! YAY
Although some sources claim that the name “Pickleball” was derived from that of the Pritchard’s family dog, Pickles, other sources state that the claim is false, and that the name came from the term “pickle boat”, referring to the last boat to return with its catch.[According to Joan Pritchard, Joel Pritchard’s wife, the name came “after I said it reminded me of the Pickle Boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats. Somehow the idea the name came from our dog Pickles was attached to the naming of the game, but Pickles wasn’t on the scene for two more years. The dog was named for the game.”
Pickleball is called pickleball because of the reason listed below.
PICKLES WAS THE FAMILY DOG (NAME) THAT WOULD CHASE AFTER THE ERRANT BALLS AND THEN HIDE IN THE BUSHES, THUS PICKLE’S BALL WHICH WAS LATER SHORTENED TO THE NAMESAKE OF PICKLE-BALL. INITIALLY, FAMILIES PLAYED PICKLE-BALL IN THEIR BACKYARDS ON A HARD SURFACE, ON DRIVEWAYS, AND ON RESIDENTIAL DEAD-END STREETS. SINCE THE MID-1970’S, PICKLE-BALL HAS GROWN AND EXPANDED FROM A FAMILY ACTIVITY GAME TO A PADDLE COURT SPORT WITH FORMALIZED RULES.
There are many different stories on why pickle ball is called pickle ball but two of the more common stories are as stated below. The first story is that Joel Pritchard who was part of the U.S House of Representatives was out with his two friends while they where bored. They decided to play badminton but after trying to find the shuttlecock and failing to find it, they modified the badminton game. They used paddles of wood that they made in a shed nearby, lowered the badminton net, and finally picked up a whiffle ball and started playing. The second story is that a family created this game and began playing it in their yard, but their dog pickles used to always steal and hide the whiffle ball. This led them to call it pickle’s ball which they later shortened to pickle ball.
For this Spring Break I went to Rome with my family and my grandparents. We ate a lot of different kinds of food and went to many different sceneries. We saw the spanish steps, trevi fountain, vatican city, the colosseum and many other places. The thing I did to stay active was walking. We usually had hour long tours, and walked almost everywhere. We walked a few hours and miles everyday so every time I went back to our temporary home my legs were burning.
During the spring break I didn’t do a variety of active sports, however I did play a lot of basketball when it was not raining. I also ran several times in my compound and went to play badminton with friends. So these are the active activities I did in Spring Break.
