Farewell and Hello Summer!

It’s been a fabulous last week of 1 BE. Thank you, parents, for the End of the Year Party on Tuesday.  Wednesday’s swim party was also special. Plus, we celebrated Ava and Louise’s summer birthdays this week. Just a few minutes ago, we said our farewells and best wishes to Chandra and Vishal. We’ll stay in touch.

It is with sadness and gratitude I see this wonderful school year come to an end.  I’m grateful to know we will return August 12 to begin second grade together.

This summer I hope the children enjoy reading, writing, puzzles, playing outside, going barefoot, catching lightning bugs, swimming, reading, writing, rolling in the grass, trying new things and enjoying family and friends.

Have a wonderful summer!

Please enjoy the photos below of our swim party and last full day of school.

Celebration of Learning!

Summer Sizzler was an absolute blast yesterday morning!  The students enjoyed being totally engaged in outdoor games for over 2 hours. The water games seem to be a huge hit. Then, to have our Celebration of Learning in the afternoon was like icing on the cake. The students were fabulous with their performances in Readers’ Theatre in both Three Billy Goats Gruff and Jill and the Beanstalk.  Parents have every reason to be very proud of their first grade children who are definitely ready to move on to 2nd grade.

The excitement of summer is always invigorating. But, the reality is I’m always sad to see a school year come to an end. It is with comfort and joy I leave here knowing I will return in August to be with the children as second graders.

This afternoon, first graders received their yearbooks and we had an autograph party with each other.

Next week will be full of fun while we enjoy our End of the Year Party, Swim Party,  Ava and Louise’s summer birthdays and a farewell to Vishal and Chandra. We will sorely miss Vishal and Chandra but please know we will stay in touch.

Please enjoy the slideshow below from Summer Sizzler and Celebration of Learning.

Please note the following dates on your calendar:

From May to June!

My goodness… is it already the end of May?! We are enjoying our time together as we enter the last 2 weeks of the school year. It is heart warming to see the students deeply engaged with books during reading workshop.  In reading students’ “Top 10 Things about First Grade” lists, I learned they love free choice. This is a credit to the strong spirit of friendship within the class.

Parents, please plan to attend our Celebration of Learning this Thursday, June 4. If the Summer Sizzler is moved to the rain date of June 5, then the Celebration of Learning will be moved to the same date. Please plan to watch two simple Readers’ Theatre performances and then enjoy looking through your child’s first grade portfolio.  After enjoying the portfolio together, your child may be dismissed with you. Or, your child can stay for the remainder of the day. Thank you for your support.

I am very grateful to celebrate my birthday with the students today. The students made me feel very special. Please note the photo below.

Highlights of learning this week are as follows:

  • Reading and Writing Workshop – Reading fairytales and folktales.

Double Pleasure

Wow!  This week has been packed with special events and activities.  We have enjoyed many fun and enriching China Alive activities planned and led by our Teachers of Chinese. This morning, we loved the carnival that was full of Chinese cultural centers.  In addition, we had not one, or two, but THREE award winning authors. We were able to hear them speak and teach in larger groups and with our individual class. What an amazing week!

I am extremely grateful for all of the support 1 BE’s parents give our class.  Thank you to all the parents who helped with Rock Climbing last Tuesday.

In case you are wondering, our class photo taken  last winter was printed with the wrong school year numbers.  They are being reprinted with the correct year and should arrive soon.  I am sorry I did not inform you of the photo situation earlier.

Highlights of learning this week are as follows:

  • Reading and Writing Workshop – Hosting a museum of our teaching stories with PKSB.  We also finished our First Grade Book of Facts and can take turns bringing it home.  As a cumulative celebration, we had a special recess time with all of first grade later Wednesday afternoon.
  • Math – Working with fractional parts of a whole.
  • Science – Watching our silkworms double in size within a few days and our corn grow.
  • Highlights – China Alive and 3 Amazing Award winning Authors plus Rock Climbing for the 5th and last time this school year.

Please note the following dates:

  • Thursday through Thursday, May 14 – 21 – Mrs. Erickson will be in the states. Ms. Connie will be the lead teacher. Ms. Ganga will be the TA.
  • Monday, May 25 – 3:00 – 6:00, 3rd Annual Iron Eagle Triathlon
